Black Spider Monkeys are one of the largest primates in South America. Their prehensile tail allows them to find stability when sitting on branches, to reach out for food at the tip of fragile branches by suspending themselves, and also as a fifth member for moving in perilous places. This allows them to reach down to pluck fruit or flowers from the tip of a branch. Black Spider Monkeys have long, glossy black hair covering their entire bodies except their faces. Adults have red or pink–skinned faces which are bare except for a very few short white hairs on their muzzles. Infants do not have pinkish faces like adults but rather dark skin on their faces which lightens as they age. Black Spider Monkeys are found in Eastern South America in Brazil, French Guianan, Guyana and Surinam. Their weight ranges from 7 to 9 kg. Body ranges from 40 to 60 centimetres, and the tail is 60-80 centimetres. To find out more about the Black Spider Monkeys, we invite you to visit Mystic Monkeys & Feathers Wildlife Park.
